We regularly encounter several species in our waters. Humpback whales are the most common, known for their acrobatic behavior and distinctive tail flukes. We also see finback whales (the second-largest whale species) and smaller minke whales. As for marine mammals people call "dolphins," we technically see porpoises—both common porpoises and the distinctive two-tone variety with saddle-like markings. Porpoises are virtually guaranteed on every trip and often steal the show with their playful antics.

We maintain the legal distance of 100 yards from whales to protect these magnificent animals. However, whales often surface much closer to the boat on their own—we can't control where they come up! We position the boat strategically, shut down the engines, and let them move naturally around us. Porpoises have fewer restrictions and frequently approach the boat to bow ride, sometimes coming within arm's reach. It's an incredible experience that respects wildlife while still offering intimate encounters.

While we can't guarantee specific whale sightings—these are wild animals in a vast ocean—we have a strong track record during the warm weather months when whales are feeding near shore. Some years are better than others depending on bait patterns and ocean conditions. Porpoises, however, are virtually guaranteed on every trip. If we need to travel farther offshore to find whales (25-35 miles), we'll discuss options with you beforehand.

We offer whale watching during the warm weather months when whales are most reliably close to shore and ocean conditions are typically calmer and more comfortable. The exact timing varies by year based on when whales arrive to feed. The beauty of our location is that we don't need to travel far to find them when conditions are right.
